7 Seeds From Your Produce Dep’t.

Many gardeners realize they can keep seeds from vegetables they grow, but may not know they can keep seeds from vegetables they buy. I can’t stand to toss seeds that I know can be planted in the garden. As long as a vegetable is not a ‘hybrid’ (usually distinguished by an adjective, as in Burpless Cucumbers) you can enjoy eating it again and again by keeping the seeds. Here are some fresh vegetables that you can keep the seeds from:
- Cucumbers
- Squashes- zucchini, yellow squash and winter squashes like spaghetti and acorn squash
- Melons
- Pumpkins
- Beans – green and wax. Note: dry beans from soup mixes are a cheap way to obtain a variety of seeds.
- Peas
- Peppers –both Sweet and Hot
To obtain seeds from fresh vegetables remove before cooking or processing. Let dry, store in an envelope or wax paper. Be sure to label specifically what type of seeds they are!
As for Tomatoes, only Heirloom Tomatoes are worth keeping the seeds from. I hesitate, though, because many tomatoes are not allowed to ripen fully before transport. Worth a try though. I will post later on how to save tomato seeds.
